How do you color your edging? Is it painted?

A Better Edge uses quality colors that are mixed throughout the cement, resulting in great hues and tones that will last for years and not chip off and detach like a paint or topcoat. Developed specifically for concrete since 1952, the pigments we use have led the industry. We also use high quality sealers which results in great, long lasting color for your landscape border.

Color Throughout

Several methods are available for coloring concrete curbing and edging, including; , finished in color hardeners, colored release agents, colored coatings, toppings and paint.

Our installers are well trained in each of these areas and these methods have their place. Yet, all of the above methods for coloring cement edging are surface colorants. Despite claims by users of color hardeners that the surface is stronger, color hardeners tend to pale and can chip off, leaving an unsightly mess. Release agents may wear without proper maintenance. Coatings, toppings and paint are; well, simply coatings, toppings and paint. A Better Edge is colored by adding a pigment to the mixing cycle. Our concrete edging has color all the way through because it's in the mix. We choose this method for durability as well as the natural look it gives to your landscaping. This method also allows us the ability to offer the widest spectrum of concrete colors available.

(The color examples given above are meant only to represent the possibilities achievable through coloring cement. Naturally occurring variations are normal, expected and desired.)

How are colors made?

Our colors for concrete are not dye's, stains or paints. We color our concrete curbing with pure, concentrated pigments made of metal oxides recycled from iron or refined from the earth and specially processed for mixing into concrete. They are lightfast, alkali-resistant, weather-resistant, durable and, like concrete, they are long-lasting. A Better Edge is available in a wide spectrum of colors and those colors can be custom formulated to match design requirements.

These concentrated pigments are added to the batch of cement during the mixing cycle. They are measured for batch-to-batch consistency. Our colors comply with ASTM C979* Pigments for Integrally Colored Concrete.

We are able to purchase pigments from a variety of manufacturers. If you are working with someone on a sidewalk or patio and would like to use the same color scheme, ask them what supplier they are using and the color name. Be sure however to check with your installers warranty information. Pure iron oxide pigments will not fade. If the warranty mentions the possibility of fade, tell them you'll gladly pay more to use the good stuff.
