Its not that we need more landscapers; it seems there are already hundreds in the phone book and countless more guys with "a shovel and a pickup". The issue is not numbers. The issue...

The difference between Curb-It® brand landscape curb and other generic curb brands is in the mix design and finish of the concrete. These are valuable tools that contribute to the overall look and quality of your curb.

It is important to understand that each step of the training course builds on the previous. In order to learn the mountain stone, one must first have an understanding of our finishing processes, which are drastically different from what you may be used to and will take time and dedication to master. Likewise in order to comprehend our finishing methods, you must first understand our mix design and how it differs from what you may currently be using.

Concrete Garden Edging

Tried going to the local big box store for edging lately? Good luck. The chore of edging and weeding your lawn seems to be one that will not relent. Chad and Kara Livingston of Colorado Springs know the feeling. That's one reason A Better Edge is becoming a household name in our little city.

Us Coloradans like our outdoor living areas and we probably wouldn't mind trimming so much... if it only took a few minutes. But constant weeds and grass in our flowerbeds; arrgh! Fortunately, there is a solution that saves time and looks great too. A Better Edge concrete landscape edging.

Concrete Curbing?

My desire with this article is to educate our potential clients on what to look for in a cement type edging while raising the standards of the entire concrete curbing industry in general through giving potential buyers of edging and curbs for their lawn more information about the product and processes.

We recently replaced the following concrete curbing and with the clients' permission, we took pictures of this generic curbing before we tore it out.

Q: I've heard you use a forming machine. Is this possible to do myself or can I hire someone cheaper?

This is a great question. And for the most handy "do it yourselfers" among us, it is a tempting proposition. The honest answer is yes. I have seen projects done by the homeowner themselves. I've also witnessed "cheaper" alternatives. However, the honest answer comes with a plea attached. Please, we beg you; do not do this yourself. The curb appeal of your lawn is one of the first impressions people get when visiting your home. Having a poor quality "loaf of concrete" in your front yard can be a quick turn off to any prospective buyer and shoddy workmanship gives the industry a black eye.

It is a common misconception that

What's wrong with Metal Edging?

"Metal lawn and garden edging in landscaped neighborhoods presents a previously undescribed laceration danger to children. Some lacerations sustained from the metal lawn edging are extensive, receiving either multiple layer closure and/or the need for subspecialty consultation." - Emergency Department, The Children's Hospital, University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Denver, USA. rittichier.kristine@hsc.utah.edu

Metal edging has got to be one of the worst inventions ever. I am pretty sure it was the result of extra metal being cut off the ends of projects and then the plant finding a way to sell their scrap for profit. Metal edging is a bad choice for several reasons:

Can I drive on it?

Our reinforced concrete mix design is extremely strong. Independent test results show our cement borders to be as strong as 4000psi or more. A Better Edge should withstand most anything from commercial riding mowers to string trimmers.

We do not recommend driving a vehicle over our typical garden edging. However, we do have concrete curbing available for parking lots and driveways.

Is this maintenance free?

Our Stamped Concrete Edging offers a virtually maintenance free lifespan. The colors we use are UV stable, meaning they will not fade. Thus, there will be no need to stain or paint your edging, ever. It is a good idea to seal every type of concrete you have once every few years to keep the elements out. Our non-yellowing, clear concrete sealer is available for purchase if you feel the need to seal your edging.

How much per foot?

We are often asked this very question. Our product is a linear one and it is likewise logical to expect a price in this manner. We do not wish to frustrate honest inquirers or waste your time with a lengthy sales pitch. However, we cannot confidently give a fair price over the phone or online without first seeing the nature of the application. Every installation is different. We must asses the location, the terrain and the design. In an effort to serve each of our clients to the utmost, we offer completely free estimates throughout Colorado Springs, the Tri-Lakes (Monument, Woodmoor and Palmer Lake), Black Forest, Peyton, Falcon, Castle Rock, Fountain and the Broadmoor area. Visit our price examples for a better idea of what our edging costs.
